As an immigrant, I felt excluded from the community I supposedly belonged to. It was hard to feel represented as a minority. Through my experience in high school collaborating with other students to create events and organizations, I now feel connected to my community. By hosting an event so ambitious and radical, I hope to inspire other students to challenge what is believed students can accomplish and to further empower minority groups and struggling communities.
Being raised by a single immigrant mother, I know firsthand just how difficult it can be for someone to overcome economic and cultural barriers. These experiences left in me a desire to help others who have come from disadvantaged backgrounds and put them into a position to succeed. Taking what was once considered an absurd idea that would be impossible to accomplish, especially considering our lack of experience and connections, we hope that our story can be an inspiration to others who were once told the same.Â
Having always been interested in the aspects of business, we decided to enter a club called DECA. After seeing all the amazing work other students have accomplished throughout the years, we gained a new perspective on what we are capable of accomplishing ourselves. We set off on an ambitious goal, combining our interest in business, to give back to our community through a charity gala. Having come from a disadvantaged background, we understand just how impactful a little push could. With that in mind we focused specifically on helping organizations that worked with students and people in need of economic assistance.
